Creating Confident Readers

Are you concerned about your elementary-age child’s reading skills?  Don’t Wait!!

It is easier to remediate and even prevent future reading problems when students receive early intervention in the primary grades. Call or email to book a FREE 30 minute consultation

I am a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor and special educator in Plymouth, Massachusetts with experience teaching students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. If your child is frustrated because reading seems too difficult, my customized tutoring approach can make all the difference.

I specialize in using structured literacy and the Orton-Gillingham approach for elementary age students with dyslexia, language-based learning disabilities, communication and speech sound disorders, as well as struggling readers with similar challenges. If you have a child in Pre-K, I can lay a strong foundation of essential pre-literacy skills so your child is ready to learn how to read.

Working as a teacher in elementary public schools, I became aware that children with reading difficulties needed an approach more tailored to their specific challenges than what the typical special education programming provides. That is why I became a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor. Orton-Gillingham is the most effective way to train young readers to develop the skills and the confidence to become fluent readers. My students learn to enjoy reading and the benefits of reading fluency changes how they feel about school, and about themselves.

If you would like your child to become a confident reader, then give me a call for a free 30- minute consultation and let’s talk about how I can help.

What Parents Say!

“Joanna worked with our daughter throughout 4th and 5th grade and made incredible progress.  She is now in honors English in high school and has really conquered her reading challenges. My daughter loved working with Joanna. She’s fun, friendly and diligent. I highly recommend her”.

– Tom C., parent

“Joanna is a gifted teacher and a warm and caring person. She has worked with my daughter both as a classroom co-teacher and individually for tutoring and academic support. Her ability to explain math concepts clearly and concisely is truly remarkable, and the rapport she builds with her students is exceptional. Even over Zoom, as became necessary during quarantine, her focused attention, patience, and kindness come shining through. We are lucky to have had her in our lives as a collaborative partner in my daughter’s learning.”

– Louise K., parent

“Her instructional reading level on that test in August was mid fourth and now is mid 6th”

“Yay tutoring is helping. So thank you for that. That makes me feel even better that she feels like it’s helping and she notices a difference.”

– Jelene Y., parent of 5th grade student November 2021

Before working with Joanna, basic phonemic awareness, ability to recognize sight and CVC words were all challenges. Almost importantly our daughter felt defeated and avoided taking on reading skill challenges because she had a lack of confidence in herself.

Now, our daughter can decode four letter words, CVC words and has some basic knowledge of sight words. A love for her new found confidence and pride in being a reader!

The best parts of working with Joanna include her collaborative spirit, energy, flexibility and a variety of interventions to arrive at an objective if the first intervention is not digestible. Joanna is a gem!! She is amazing and we love her!

– Rose C., parent of kindergarten student

I can’t say enough great things about Joanna. She’s incredibly patient, kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, and always open and willing to talk and/or answer questions for students and parents alike. The connection she’s made with our child, having only ever met through Zoom, is remarkable. Our child enjoys her time with Joanna, looks forward to it, and is now enjoying reading with confidence. Joanna has impacted her life in a tremendous way. It’s only been 5 months. I can only imagine her progress in a years time thanks to Joanna.

– Sue F., parent of 6th grade student

Joanna is an absolute pleasure to work with; she virtually tutors two of our children. Joanna has an upbeat, engaging personality which makes tutoring fun. Her lessons are thoughtful and targeted. We appreciate the weekly updates that she provides us with so that we can help our children at home. Joanna is very knowledgeable in the areas of reading development and dyslexia.  In addition, Joanna has been a valuable member of our team, attending IEP meetings with us as well as collaborating regularly with school staff. We are grateful for the support that Joanna provides to our family.
